ROTTEN CAVERN
Profound (2024)

Spain has just coughed up this formidable death / doom duo who go by the names E (vocals) and P (all instruments). Profound is Rotten Cavern’s debut offering and features a trio of tracks sandwiched between an intro (‘Gates’) and an outro (‘Denouement’). ‘Grim Ritual’, ‘Black Procession’ and ‘Corpse’ traipse with such dread; oozing like dark rivers of gunk through slime coated subterranean tunnels.

The way this release echoes is quite unnerving as Rotten Cavern slither slowly to great chiming vibrations of doom. It’s primitive and slow motion and shifts with such a heavyweight design draped in a foul air of morbidity. All three tracks follow similar paths as aching, yawning black chasms thick with rancid fibres and pea-soup fog aesthetics.

Even with such gloom-caked meandering there is nothing sluggish about the release and there is real tension built with those hefty, crawling riffs. I often have little patience for slow, painful death / doom, but this demo is one of those exceptions and I suggest you leap into its dragging silt.

For those of you interested, the Profound demo is available here.
