WORMFACE
A Sound You Can Smell (2023)

Featuring members of Anthropophagous, Wormface is a nasty, guttural death metal trio from Montague in Massachusetts with a line-up of Mike Fagan (vocals and bass), Shane Dupuy (guitar) and Steve Kamienski (drums). What you get here is just over 16 minutes of drudgery whereby dank, twisted riffs merge with thudding percussion and indecipherable vocal coughs.

The immediate grim joy of this opus is apparent on the opening salvo ‘Slave To Torpor’ with its perverse gait, and that dragging theme continues with the dense smothering of namesake track ‘Wormface’, the sludgy grimace of ‘Estrus Of Ghost’ and onwards through the rest of this foul demo.

There is something unusual and archaic going on here. Pace is a rare thing within the murk as the guys chug with menace through ‘Behind Bloodmask’, although the closing title track has hints of hastier retreats. However, such flirtations are coated with a thick, black smog of bludgeoning.

It’s not a simple case of calling Wormface death metal. Instead, there is a creeping, dense blanket of something else I can’t quite put my finger on. But whatever the cause for such disturbances one thing’s for sure… it is evil.

For those of you interested, the A Sound You Can Smell demo is available here.
