FUNEREALITY
Mental Funereality EP

Self-released (2022)
Rating: 8/10

This won’t be the first or last time you’ll hear a band inspired by legendary US death metal act Autopsy. Funereality is the creation of Joachim Eversholt, a Swedish chap who has been churning out this gore-crusted style of brain pummelling since 2009, during which time there has been a handful of scabby EPs, demos and early in 2022 a manky full-length in the form of Til Death.

Although the drums may lack the gruesome flair of Autopsy, this is still very much a mould-ridden, tumour-trembling expression of fetid, doom-laden death metal dripping with spew-lined vocal sneers and barbaric blurts alongside those ever dreary Autopsy axe rambles which sound as if they’ve been recorded in a bathtub while out in the fog and pelting rain.

‘Wrapped In Ancient Mold’, ‘Ineffable Ingestion’, ‘Squirm’, ‘Squishy Meat Construct’ and ‘Fleshy Phantasms’ roll off the clotted tongue like bags of old bones, while every so often there’s that dragging, gnawing ache of gloom-drenched despair. There is no better experience than being dragged into the congealed waters of a track such as ‘Fleshy Phantasms’ with its dragging dynamics and squelching vocal snarls.

Mental Funereality is ideal plodding misery if you want a soundtrack to grave desecration on a stormy, humid night of horror.
