SIGILS OF RUIN
Demo I (2023)

Indonesian death metal is not something you come across all too often but this Jakarta combo – N. Soedarijanto (vocals), J. Hardy (guitar), I. Bellum (bass) and K. Irwan (drums) – has certainly made its mark on my flesh. You only get two tracks (‘Untitled I’ and ‘Untitled II’), but there is enough here to chomp on if you like heavyweight death metal.

The lack of axe solos may cause the connoisseurs to nit-pick but I just couldn’t argue with the demonic ashen rushes, the slower segments of flesh-coated riffage and the utterly despicable vocal blasts of N. Soedarijanto – surely one of the most lethal female vocalists within the genre. Her tone just makes it sound as if she’s been consuming volcano ash for the last few years, and around her there are those doomy, morose slogs which work in wonderful tandem with the more torrential downpours of pace.

This is an impressive death metal offering that deserves to get a lot of recognition, especially when one considers that there are a lot of American bands doing the same thing and getting so much credit. Sigils Of Ruin then are the new name on the death block to not only grab your attention but fill your ears with satanic soot.

I understand that Sigils Of Ruin are currently working on their debut full-length album, but in the meantime the band’s demo is available here.
