SEXMAG
Sexorcyzm

Dying Victims Productions (2025)
Rating: 8/10

Polish black thrashers SexMag are a strange bunch, having first caught my attention in 2021 with their Sex Metal EP. It was an organic and vicious ride into the rawest depths, and those elements continue here on what is such a .malicious, old school sounding full-length.

I heard the title track first, a ripping assault featuring harsh vocal tirades and the sort of violent thrash that could easily have been created in the South American underground. The fact SexMag are Polish makes no difference, they carve out superbly aggressive noise wrapped in a striking cover and a torrent of scathing riffs.

After an atmospheric intro (‘Total Metal’) the clan heads into the archaic brilliance of ‘Inkubus’ where there are some steady mid-tempo riffs which merge simply with faster rhythms. Some of the vocals are utterly fiendish from caped sorcerer Jacek “Truposz” Wojno as he adjoins with the sonic satanic force of the brain-melting thrash.

Splashes of early Morbid Angel merge with the sediment of Sarcofago as a hail of tracks swirl and chatter like demons circling your sorry carcass. Considering the style of brash black thrash this album is delivered in, Sexorcyzm is also adept at serving up a couple of longer tracks ensuring this album doesn’t just zip by without effect. ‘Sex z Diabłem’, obviously recorded in Lucifer’s basement, crash and bangs and wallops like an angry poltergeist in a kitchen. The drums are harsh and rough, the bass shudders and the riffs snake their way with a Slayer-esque charm. A few crazy solos infiltrate the cellar haze, but which ever pace it chooses it’s a song that revels in its own clamour.

Put this album on in 1982 and you’d smell the sulphur wafting from the stereo speakers, but even decades later a band like SexMag can construct a clatter that still has an effect. Another lengthier track is ‘Psalm I – Intronizacja Szatana’ which builds slowly with some chilly lead work amidst intermittent percussive hisses and then remains mid-tempo for its duration.

SexMag have a knack of building up suspense like an old 70s gothic horror movie. One can hear the creak on the stairs and the moaning trees outside the rattling window. Even with the more volatile offerings such as ‘Odurzony śmiercią’ there is still that sinister presence hiding within the spit of the riffs and those vocal blasts.

Sexorcyzm is a ghoulish gem; a haunted house of hailstorm and hellfire that will infiltrate your nightmares and tear off your skin.
