With their ninth full-length studio album, Swedish death metal mob Revolting carves out another slab, which pretty much sums up the prolific yet unremarkable output of riffmeister Revolting Rogga (aka Rogga Johansson). Rogga has become more than a journeyman within the death metal scene, creating and being part of at least 50 bands, including Massacre.
There’s no denying Rogga’s passion for the subject, as alongside him bassist Grotesque Tobias and drummer Mutated Martin help him construct bruising and menacing chunks of fleshy Swedish pulp. As expected, there are those feisty foaming and concise numbers (‘Seven Severed Heads’) alongside more melodic, less pacier splatters (‘The Final Journey’) and no thrills in-between or around the edges.
There’s little to get excited about amid the familiar and often generic gushes. It’s Swedish death metal right down to Rogga’s frothy chops as the trio dishes up steady rhythms like ‘A Song For The Morbid’, juggernaut ‘Swipe Of The Schyte’ and the mashing belligerence of the title track and macabre buzzsaw butchery ‘Shapeshifter’. Strangely, Revolting wait for ‘Outro’ until any sort variety is applied and it’s done with quite an atmospheric effect due to the cinematic feel overlayed by Rogga’s guttural growl.
Consistency is key here, as with most Rogga Johansson releases, and while there’s nothing here to truly grab you, the sound of Revolting is the musical equivalent to that solid meat n’ potatoes meal to fuel the soul. Nice cover art too.
