MORTUARY GHOUL
Wear Your Face: Corpse Exhumation Redux

Iron Fortress (2025)
Rating: 7/10

Existing as a reworked version of Mortuary Ghoul’s Corpse Exhumation EP from 2022, Wear Your Face: Corpse Exhumation Redux is a more expansive composition featuring a trio of new tracks and tacky artwork from Julian Mortuus. Inspired, as before, by cult horror movie Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974), Wear Your Face… is a full on dose of Mortician worship which comes complete with a cover rendition of the American band’s ‘Chainsaw Dismemberment’ for extra ghoulish fun.

Ohio’s Mortuary Ghoul, if you’re not aware, provides plenty of meaty, scuzzy riffs that churn with an in infectious goofiness while the grisly lurk beneath the stench. The Mortician influence means that a thick haze wafts over the ten songs on offer to the extent that after my fourth listen I just had to watch a few sleazy 70s horror films such as Deranged (1974).

The three new tracks are more of note, with ‘The Saw Is Family’, ‘Bone Room’ and ‘Mallet To The Head’ all grinding with psychotic delight as riffs and drums act more as hammering weapons of murder. ‘The Saw Is Family’ is gruesomely aggressive, but in contrast my favourite slab, ‘Bone Room’, churns like a cauldron of jellified innards, congealed vomit and bone broth. The riffs are severely heavy, gnashing like hog tusks in a field of corpse mulch. These two songs sum up the repulsive gore-caked death sludge of Mortuary Ghoul, and ‘Mallet To The Head’ is no different, a slaughterhouse of blast beats and an abattoir of suffocating riffs, a devastating death metal avalanche.

As for the rest, well, it’s all solidly remixed and remastered by Wes Mousseau, but was all this necessary? To be honest, it’s all a bit pointless, especially if you already own the original EP. But what I will say is that if, like me, you’re a vinyl collector, then try and grab yourself a copy of the limited edition vinyl which comes with a “skin mask”.
