Twenty-five years in the business and North Carolina’s grisly deathsters Lust Of Decay finally gets round to issuing a long-awaited fourth full-length album, coming 19 years after last slab Purity Through Dismemberment. Okay, there have been a few hiatuses throughout the band’s career, but the inactivity has resulted in a formidable return.
If you like extreme death metal then Entombed In Sewage will turn your ear canals inside out. But for me, this is an acquired taste, a torrential battering ram of head-splitting percussion, organ twisting axework and gargled vocals which sound as if vocalist Jay Barnes has been chewing and swallowing staples.
‘Nourishing The Swine’ was the single to announce the return, a brutal concoction of the clinical and the chaotic as drummer Jordan Varela rabidly smashes his kit. The bludgeoning is uninviting for anyone not prepared for such bruising dynamics. And so the theme is set, an unfiltered array of aggressive death metal bereft of swampiness in spite of its title. Throw this back in the late 90s melting pot and it wouldn’t seem out of place as ‘Fetal Contamination Process’ chugs with a mid-range malevolence. The vocals, though, do test my patience, bordering on a chewy goregrind aesthetic which is rarely pleasing.
There are still some strong grooves offered musically throughout, particularly the vicious sniping of ‘Order 66’ which is a relentless tirade of brutal death metal. However, a lot of the album seems to blur into one and the novelty sort of wears off after opener ‘Parasitic Exsanguination’. The ridiculously titled ‘Rusty Razor Rimjob’ features a solid guitar tone, and there’s plenty more spewed vocals over the choppy riffage. A bit more grime on the guitars wouldn’t have gone amiss throughout because they just feel too generic and safe sometimes, but Entombed In Sewage will certainly please long term fans of the band.
