LIVING METAL
Do You Believe In Steel?

Self-released (2021)
Rating: 7/10

Light the fires, batten down the hatches and prepare to be slaughtered by Flying V’s, glinting swords and the stench of leather. Forged in the molten pits of Brazil’s underground, Living Metal unleashes its pet dragon in the form of this debut studio album, Do You Believe In Steel?.

Arguably one of the most metal acts in the South American circuit, São Paulo’s Living Metal has only existed for three years and already the gods are taking note. I really enjoyed the band’s 2018 self-titled debut EP and I was hoping this full-length outing would hit like a hammer, and it does.

With track titles such as ‘We Are Metal… You Are Not!’ and ‘Alcohol’ it’s not humourless metal. And even with the more direct numbers like ‘Hitting The Road’ I can’t help but chortle, even if the band doesn’t want me to. However, this is still balls to the wall metal fury featuring chugging riffs, wild solos and rough ‘n’ ready vocals that leave greasy streaks on your windows.

‘It’s Only About Heavy Metal’ stinks of cheese, but a tune such as ‘By The Honor Of The Blade’ shows the band in a more epic, serious light. ‘Bells Of Freedom’ clanks nicely, while ‘Night Action’ struts with sleaze and arrogance into the chimes of the title track.

Think of Judas Priest, think of Grave Digger, maybe Manowar… y’know the score – fiery, gritty, fully armoured and anthemic metal with drunken tendencies resulting in those sweathog band members stealing your wife.
