DECIMATOR
’Til The Enemies Are Gone

Self-released (2024)
Rating: 5.5/10

These Australian metallers should have realised that the moniker Decimator has been taken several times over, but it hasn’t stopped the Sydney-based combo from releasing a half-decent debut full-length album.

Solid is the word I’d use to describe this offering; a steely affair that at any time can promise thrash or power metal but just about avoid both. Instead, you get some interesting heavy metal such as on ‘The Rock’ which is a driving combination of Motörhead, Raven and Metal Church. The namesake song ‘Decimator’ has that hasty thrash edge as again there are drifts towards Metal Church or Meliah Rage. It’s somewhat no frills but reliably structured and boasting plenty of aggression in its riffs, drumming and the vocals of guitarist Lance Holland-Keen.

‘Burn The Truth’ begins with a chugging menace before opting for pace and then the charge is littered with some nice melodic soloing straight from the traditional metal textbook. Meanwhile, ‘Killdozer’ begins in a subtle and stark fashion before some serious groove elements kick in alongside some catchy mid-tempo chugging.

Decimator seems confused throughout, unsure as to which style suits them best. One moment ‘Legion’ gallops with a boozy Teutonic slope, the next ‘The Blade’ fuses thrash and groove metal. Oddly, even with its variations this outing is colourless, reminding me of some late 90s European bland metal machine. Unfortunately, ’Til The Enemies Are Gone doesn’t linger for long in the memory bank.
