CHASMDWELLER
Blood Vortex

Self-released (2023)
Rating: 7/10

In 2022 I waded, knee-deep through the dregs of human waste that were created by Toronto, Ontario-based mob Chasmdweller with their Festering In Aural Trauma EP. A year later and I’m still traipsing through their congealed mess with the band’s latest full-length which channels Finnish and Floridian foulness.

Blood Vortex features seven tracks, many of which are a tad overlong, but which slime you with their menace. Juicy juggernaut deathliness is the order of the day here from the steady hefty barrages of opener ‘Corpulent Sap’, into the trudging cess-pit cacophony of ‘Dimensional Hallucinatory Impulse’ and onwards through the bludgeoning ‘Orbital Thrash’.

This is a record that rarely waves from its meaty churning and a place where flesh-clogged rivers bubble and flow and vocal gurgles remain a constant, whether it be the drudgery of ‘Cognitive Dissipation’, the driving pace of ‘Suspended In Effluence’, the steady tumbles of ‘Molecular Clot’, and the final pulping gore of ‘Diluted Ephemeral Obfuscation’. Sure, it’s quite limited in its horror and the vocals – which lean more towards a grindcore hissing snarl – can irritate after a short while, but in its repetition and musical stench Blood Vortex remains a persistent and pustular exercise.
