Thrash metal is always the ideal soundtrack when an apocalypse is on the horizon and Springfield, Massachusetts-based act Nuclear Threat is the latest foray into such savagery. Channelling the Teutonic angst of old Sodom and fusing it with classic Slayer, this self-titled EP rages like a whirlwind that picks up rust and debris and spits it back in your face.
The whole look of this short blast does resemble many other thrash outings that have emerged over the last 20 years but sound-wise this feels more underground, especially with the raw vocal slurs which have that mid-80s style.
Six tracks are spewed up, a majority of which are to the point and brimming with hostility. However, amid the belligerence there are some devilishly slick solos as experienced on the likes of ‘Full Force’. Opener ‘Irradiated’ features all the traditional thrash dynamics and delivers in a steady juggernaut fashion. ‘Population Obliteration’ expresses far more aggressive tones as does ‘Light Up The Sky’, but even with the mid tempo ranges Nuclear Threat still engages with a crisp, crunchy ferocity. Closer ‘B.C.M. (Bone Crushing Metal)’ pretty much says it all, a steely, rattling composition that rounds off a deadly piece of thrash work that should make toxic waves within the genre.
