Upon hearing the song ‘Ritual Sacrifice’ I began thinking about how the role of the Incantation template plays a part in so much death metal. However, what’s interesting about this Baltimore, Maryland-based quintet is how they twist the narrative by implementing their own brutal and grotesque equations.
Having been on the scene for 13 years now, I had anticipated a full-length from Putrisect, however, the six songs (one being a cover of Machetazo’s ‘Espectro’) certainly suffice. As I said, ‘Ritual Sacrifice’ has cavernous qualities, dank echoes which resonate via putrid riffs. The vocals, belonging to new recruit Matt Powel (aka Matt Buttz), have more of a slimy texture as they slither towards guttural gasps coated in thick layers of mucus. There’s also a combination of filthy pace and examples of how modern bands are adding layers of gloom to old school values.
Standout track ‘Slave To Lust’ morbidly trudged through its own riff compost, the vocals acting as silt coated growls before the pace picks up and the drums rattle. In their steady throes, Putrisect are at their grisliest, more so with the thudding percussion that hints at a Bolt Thrower style of menace.
‘Trepanation’ showcases such mid-paced drudgery, a track so vile and squalid that no amount of disinfectant can rid the grime, while ‘Conquistador’ is another of those grinding mid-paced slogs. This is all fetid yet disgustingly groovy and a full-length must surely be next, and I can’t wait because these 22 minutes are just not enough.
