EVILCULT
Triumph Of Evil

Awakening (2025)
Rating: 6.5/10

Snapping at your toes like a rabid rat, Triumph Of Evil is the musical equivalent of receiving lashings from a whip; you know what’s coming but it still stings! This is the third full-length from Brazilian maniacs Evilcult, who look like Sarcófago although there’s a lot more melody to be found here amongst the bracken.

High pitched vocals mix with lower primitive tones while the music is busy speed metal almost of vintage Teutonic design. A chap named Lucas From Hell (vocals and rhythm guitar) is the only original member from 2016 and he leads the cacophony towards a spiky black thrash swipe, yelping and yelling all manner of satanically steered words into the night sky.

Those expecting a completely primitive and raw scrapheap may be surprised by some of the tight and streaking melodies as missiles ‘Midnight Ritual’, ‘Satanic Revolution’ and ‘Warrior Of Doom’ strike with military precision. It’s not quite the demonic alcohol-fuelled orgy of blasphemy I was expecting in spite of its hostile nature. Unintentionally goofy, the rest of the band – Hell Bordini (lead guitar), Speed Lobo-Guará (bass) and Filipe Stress (drums) – stir up the ghosts of old Sodom, streaking each snap with a glint of cartoonish evil.

This is still very much underground metal with the gnash of a demented Bayou snapping turtle on a cocaine-powdered Bathory kick. ‘Waves Of Agony’, ‘Nosferatu’ and the title cut are not strangers to conniving, devilish melodies, and that’s the actual appeal here because in general the thrashy attacks are generic spikes. At just over 35 minutes, Evilcult’s latest album is not exactly a triumph, or evil, but it’s not for the want of trying.
