Nashville, Tennessee-based Savage Attack is an act that does indeed live up to their name – an old school sounding thrash band with some tight melodies and crossover elements. The biggest shame here is that this four-song EP runs just shy of 13 minutes, but in that time you get battered by the choppy vocal outbursts of bassist Brock Bombenhagel who wouldn’t have been out of place fronting D.R.I. in the late 80s. His style is a confrontational blast of energetic raps and retorts led vigorously by the double team axe assault from Samual Chainsaw and Tommy Riprider.
Influences are numerous although I hear more of a crossover slant on the opening title track, but as you dig deeper into the remaining trio of songs – ‘Frozen In Fear’, ‘Fresh Blood And Cheap Denim’ and ‘Bastards Of Metal’ – you can’t help but skate n’ mosh along.
‘Frozen In Fear’ is a barbaric thrash attack boosted by the percussive fury of Frank Maniac, his violent thuds force you to envisage real mosh pits of the 80s when there was spontaneous chaos rather than orchestrated dance moves. The riffs cut through the smog, razor sharp yet loose n’ lethal. There’s a welcoming groove as one is experiencing Sacred Reich for the first time. Throw in some Exodus, some Overkill and a dash of Teutonic force and a hefty dose of Forced Entry and you’ll get some idea of the plan here.
‘Fresh Blood And Cheap Denim’ is rampant thrashcore, a sweat fest of bruising fast riffs and the muscular bass tone and vocal slap of Brombenhagel. ‘Bastards Of Metal’ is very much a muscular anthem, slightly punky in its drum gallop and rippling with a Municipal Waste-style of alcohol infused debauchery.
Terrify The Living really is a strong EP from Savage Attack, and last year’s debut full-length album, Sent To Kill, comes highly recommended too.
