Three band members, three tracks… this is some Swedish doom metal that doesn’t overstay its welcome. On this debut EP from Stockholm-based Grimoria you get 15 minutes of heavy, laborious doom not too far removed from a sludgier Candlemass. The vocals of Mik Wizard, who also provides the gluey riffs, has a mournful tone that barks intermittently through the dense walls which are stony as well as stoned.
Lost In Shadows is not an EP that shifts a great deal from its desired path but the song ‘Riding In Hell’ provides a welcome flurry. Either side of this we have the arduous booms of the title track and ‘Judgement Day’, both of which ooze with great effect, the latter being rather stark in its suspenseful openings.
This is all very earthy and shadowy but at times formulaic in its trudging. I’m sure a full-length will enable the trio to expand more, but as it is this EP is somewhat of a dirge.
