SEPULTURA Launch Environmentally Conscious Music Video For ‘Guardians Of Earth’ Track
September 17th, 2020

Brazilian / American metal band Sepultura have launched their environmentally conscious video for ‘Guardians Of Earth’ in collaboration with Amazon Frontlines. Directed by Raul Machado, the clip can be viewed below.

Amazon Frontlines is a non-profit organization based in the Upper Amazon that leverages technology, legal advocacy and movement building to support indigenous peoples to defend their rights to land, life and cultural survival in the Amazon Rainforest.

The lyrics of the song were inspired when Sepultura frontman Derrick Green came across the Instagram page of Amazon Frontlines: “The images of the fight and struggle of various Indigenous tribes, whose existence is under threat as they defend one of world’s most biodiverse ecosystems, were very touching and upsetting. Not only are Indigenous peoples being murdered but their rainforest territories are being burned and polluted at an alarming rate. The movement is inspirational and I felt that their voices needed to be heard loudly.”

Amazon Frontlines’ Executive Director Mitch Anderson stated: “We appreciate Sepultura not only because they’re one of the greatest metal bands of all time, but because they are using their platform to shine a light on deforestation and the struggles of Indigenous peoples. By sharing these stories with the world through their music, Sepultura is doing their part to support Indigenous communities, the Guardians of Earth, as they lead the fight to protect the Amazon Rainforest and the planet.”

The ‘Guardians Of Earth’ video was directed by Brazilian director Raul Machado who worked with the band on the ‘Choke’ music video back in 1998. It contains unique footage provided by Amazon Frontlines of the Amazon Rainforest’s Indigenous tribes and wildlife whose lives are being threatened by extractive industries, government indifference, and deforestation.

Amazon destruction is a preventable disaster that affects us all because the rainforest is one of the Earth’s largest carbon sinks and provides critical prevention against runaway climate change. Unfortunately, due to the current pandemic, this issue has moved to the background in people’s minds. Sepultura hopes this video will inspire public awareness and action to protect the Amazon.

Sepultura issued 15th full-length studio album Quadra on February 7th, 2020 through Nuclear Blast Records.

The concept album was once again recorded with producer Jens Bogren at Fascination Street Studios in Örebro, Sweden.

Singer Derrick Green commented: “The experience was like no other time in the studio. I felt the preparation was key in making the recording process go as smoothly as possible. We were relentless each day giving everything that we had until complete exhaustion of the mind, body, and soul. This album is a direct result of the sign of the times. The music is an evolution needed to push ourselves to go further than we ever have.”

Cover artwork was created by Christiano Menezes for Darkside Books and can be viewed below.

The cover design revolves around the meaning of the number 4. However, the concept goes much deeper and guitarist Andreas Kisser explained the idea behind the depicted coin: “‘Quadra’, among other meanings, is the Portuguese word for ‘sport court’ that by definition is a limited area of land, with regulatory demarcations, where according to a set of rules the game takes place.

“We all come from different Quadras. The countries, all nations with their borders and traditions; culture, religions, laws, education and a set of rules where life takes place. Our personalities, what we believe, how we live, how we build societies and relationships, all depends on these set of rules that we grew up with. Concepts of creation, gods, death and ethics.

“Money, we are enslaved by this concept. Who’s poor and who’s rich, that’s how we measure people and material goods. Regardless of your Quadra you need money to survive, the prime rule to play this game called life. Hence the coin.

“The coin is forged with the senator skull, who represents the set of rules and laws we live by; the world map on his head delimiting the borders of all nations, imaginary lines separating people by concepts of race and the sacred.”
