VANITY
Feeding Hate EP

Self-released (2023)
Rating: 7/10

Vanity is a strange name for a death metal band in my opinion, but stranger still is the fact that these Brazilians have only just got round to releasing this debut EP after forming back in 2009.

The selection of tracks on offer here are raw, hectic and extremely underground and old school, especially in the production. The first quality which really slaps me hard is the drumming of Hugo Alexandre; it’s a case of total savagery as he slams hard on the skins through opening tune ‘Blood On The Road’ and he outdoes himself with each passing track, culminating in the riveting closer ‘In The Last Pulse Of Existence’.

Vocalist Eremita has a deep, throaty bellow to his style while alongside him bassist Daniel Reinnado and twin axe men David Alexandre and Paulo Freitas bring some rather unorthodox ideas; again I refer to ‘In The Last Pulse Of Existence’ as a fine example of the streaks of primal originality.

This isn’t straight up death metal, there is a peculiar and nasty thrash feel at times. ‘Fall In Decay’ features manic dynamics and some weird guitar work, but throughout this EP there are some atmospheric and gritty mid-tempo, and almost doomy trudges. This is obscure yet at times unconventional death metal from a band who demands your attention with their old school evisceration.
