TORTURED CORPSE
Burial Mounds EP

Self-released (2024)
Rating: 7/10

Why not start the New Year with some simple, raging death metal to blow away the blues. This Polish outfit was busy in 2023 releasing two EPs and a live opus and now they have returned with this four-track outing that comes equipped with a standard but enjoyable cover rendition of Impetigo’s classic ‘Boneyard’. Other than that this EP rumbles and gnashes as one would expect a death metal record too, although I do, at times, struggle with the barked vocals of Agressor. Even so, the riffs come as hostile flurries but with strong pinches of melody in the solos.

This is not the nastiest death metal racket you’ll hear but there is plenty of rawness particularly with the guttural yaps which is why the Impetigo cover fits in so well. Of the three other tunes available my favourite is the title cut, a gnarly slab of bellowing grimness which marries the thick, grinding riffs with an initial slower slither.

Opener ‘Lord Of The Worms’, which begins with the sound of buzzing flies and someone vomiting, provides a morbid rush not too dissimilar to, say, Autopsy mixed with Death; feisty, fetid rumbles bursting with primitive and perverse pride. Meanwhile, ‘Hellbound’ features plenty of consistent slurping from Agressor just to add further muck to the pungent percussive rants and general macabre feel. That is pretty much the theme here; strong and at times murky-ish and feral extremity for all who enjoy a graveside rendezvous.
