SULPHURIC DEATH
Beyond The Void Of Doom EP

Burning Coffin / Apocalyptic Productions / Clandestine Productions (2023)
Rating: 8/10

What foul cacophony has squirmed into my lap this time? Chile’s Sulphuric Death is another of those unholy South American bands that just know how to creep under your skin and devour you from the inside out. You only get three tracks but this draining abyss of gloom runs for 21 minutes, cloying at your fragile skin like a million sticky webs.

The mix of speed and clambering doom makes for an atmospheric experience as the title track oozes, then trickles and finally gushes like some bursting dam giving way to a horde of slithering demon spawn chomping at their own algae-like excretions. For six minutes wild solos scurry between blasting yet humid percussion and cavernous growls as deeper grooves get pounded into the esoteric chambers.

The tumultus ‘Immersed Into Eternal Fire’ barely stops for breath amidst a flurry of skeletal bass lines and hammering percussion. Flashes of blackened death streak around dank walls coated in glistening globules of fungal dew. The pace is something akin to pungent air filtering through oily crevices of black rock. Last but not least ‘Glorious Abomination’ builds with suspense and a decadent gloom where thick layers of rank guitar act as walls of filth as the steady tempo carves its way into an eventual foaming tide of aggression.

This is grim death metal that drips with an organic and ghoulish ooze, not original but certainly toxic in its repugnant outpouring of fetid spores.
