SPINEBREAKER
Cavern Of Inoculated Cognition EP

Creator-Destructor (2023)
Rating: 8/10

These are Californian hardcore kids – well, not quite “kids” as they’ve been hanging around since 2013 – but their image suggests something more streetwise and yet they play death metal. It’s an interesting blend, especially with the vibrant cover art and very death metal album title.

Musically, Cavern Of Inoculated Cognition rumbles extremely hard and boasts a strong Vastum vibe, especially in the vocal department. Tracks such as ‘Spectral Forge’ chug with a billowing aplomb circa the ashen grinds of classic Bolt Thrower and ‘Bone Riddling Necrosis’ applies speed and extra layers of filth, while ‘Crimson Mask’ again injects a Bolt Thrower passage or two. It’s incredibly effective and dare I say it simplistic in design.

This EP feels fat in its rolls as well as infectious in that old school death metal way, but it does not just exist on tried and tested formulas and a song like ‘Infinite Crest’ is evidence of that. Somewhat of surprise then, Spinebreaker tick all the death metal boxes and occasionally inject a hardcore swagger resulting in a rather satisfying and chunky bowl of brutality.
