SENTINELS
Paranormal EP
Self-released (2024)

This is the third EP from a Chilean band that formed as Sentinel in 2017 before deciding to add the “s” on the end of their moniker two years later. In 2020 the Santiago-based thrashers released a debut full-length album entitled Trasciende.
This Paranormal EP is an enjoyable experience and quite vicious in its approach. That’s not to say it has a particularly raw or underground feel, but I do like the vocals of Christopher Espinoza Aguilar whose tone switches from hostile rasp to high pitched squawk. I guess you could compare this effort to any number of old school thrash acts, particularly those of the 80s South American underground scene alongside early Slayer, Whiplash etc.
Opener ‘Miedo’ is a good example of the hostile energy the band produces. All four tracks – ‘Miedo’, ‘Esquizofrenia’, ‘Sin Control’ and ‘Paranormal’ – are fast outbursts awash with worming solos and rapid riffs and drums. At times the songs do seem to melt into one, but they also showcase the savagery of the band because although it’s very much no frills dynamics, the pure thrash mayhem cannot be denied. This is a strong EP from a fast n’ furious fraternity.
