MULYFICATION
Marshwalker EP

Deepswarming Bloodmagik (2022)
Rating: 7/10

It’s great to see Ukraine on the death metal map, especially when it comes to the realms which harbour such primitive designs.

With titles such as ‘Swamp Hut’, ‘Mold-Eating Creature From The Deepless Abyss’ and ‘Chained In Maggot Nest, I knew this was going to be a foul experience for me to savour. Everything about this design is rank, morbid and fusty; the riffs of the opus – although very archaic – do have crispness to them but it doesn’t detract from the grubby odour exuded.

I just love the tone of this six-track EP, and even the cover of the Pungent Stench track ‘Bonesawer’ is admirable. But for me it’s the brooding, dreadful design of ‘Mold-Eating Creature From The Deepless Abyss’ which sums this band up; the riffs creep with intensity, the vocals leak with oozing trepidation and the whole feel is of a pitch black network of foul-smelling tunnels which act as burrowing lairs for unspeakable horrors.

The title track has that same ominous atmosphere where the guitars creep with a dread and dissonance whether slow or pacier. However, it remains graven and doom-laden, flashing with black / death nuances at times but mostly just lumbering with a grim, sneering guise.

At their slowest, Mulyfication is one hell of a heavy, suffocating combo and the way they maintain that macabre air is to be admired. This is good, ungodly death metal rich in gloominess and well worthy of your time.
