DEHISCENCE
Colony EP

Chaos / Seeds Of Doom (2022)
Rating: 7/10

Featuring members from Diabolic Oath and Funebrarum, Dehiscence is a Portalnd, Oregon-based death / grind act with one of those unreadable logos that looks like a cob-web. Expect to be bludgeoned into oblivion with this 16 minute assault that taps into the same hostile mind-set which made the likes of Terrorizer and Napalm Death so disruptive.

Colony is a pretty chaotic and unrelenting affair so I’d highly recommend you brace yourself for the sonic whirlwind of blast beats and grinding riffage because this thing doesn’t let up. This is summed up by the harsh crushing dynamics of ‘Lobotomized At Birth’ which still manages a deep lying groove within its hostile folds.

For the most part this is a fast, blasting and bewildering death metal slab that channels an early-to-mid-90s vibe, with the likes of ‘Begging’ and ‘Rust Wound’ being prime examples. Both of these tracks inflict a punky aesthetic but without sacrificing any sort of destruction or weight.

It took me several listens to fully appreciate the dynamics of this EP but there was never any doubt as to its punishing behaviour. This is a hefty release sure to please those old Earache Records devotees of yore.
