CRIMSØN FRÖXX
Space Murder EP

Self-released (2022)
Rating: 7/10

I’m blessed once again by another of those obscure looking mid-to-late 80s designs as this Mexican combo rattles me with their debut tirade, Space Murder. This EP delivers five tracks, one being a short intro before the wild blasts of ‘Chaos Awaits’ singes your eyebrows like a burning sun.

I wasn’t sure what to expect with this bunch but it is the heaviness which caught me off guard. The guitars of Alfredo Araya (rhythm) and Li Frankenstein (lead) have a thick, fiery tone and eerie solos echo throughout this lo-fi affair. The riffs remain molten and dense and border on a Slayer vibe, while the bass of Sebastián Cortés and drums of Jesus Ontiveros hurtle with equal hostility.

Vocally, frontman Araya has a wild, rasping tone and the whole thing results in a murky primal Possessed tone with its cavernous atmosphere and strange, unorthodox stirrings. ‘Winter Freezes Hell’ is a fast-paced composition packed with wild guitars and the equally frenzied percussion of Ontiveros who sounds as if he’s bashing two garbage can lids together.

Within all its primal fury there is a real 80s satanic charm to this messy thrash escapade which culminates in the excellent ‘Reign Of Terror’ which suggests a maturity with its opening acoustic setting before it truly disappears into garage land.

This is a rough n’ barely ready EP that brims with a vicious excitement and reckless rebellion. Will Crimsøn Fröxx even make it to a full-length before imploding? Who knows, but I wait with baited breath for the next episode of underground zaniness.
