BURDEN
Self Prison EP

Self-released (2024)
Rating: 6.5/10

While this Indonesian band has obvious punk and hardcore traits, the primitive nature of this short EP drifts towards a speed and black metal chaos too. The cover art is so striking too as it depicts a cult of skeletal figures mid-ritual. It looks like an 80s thrash or death demo, but the music contained is just as lethal.

Ridden with a fuzzy bass from “T” and harsh, scratchy vocals courtesy of “G”, the five songs on offer whiz by at an alarming rate of knots. The opening title track is a raw, maniacal heap of trash built upon the cereal box drums of “L”. The theme is just demented scowling black punk core whereby the guitar of “V” just acts as a hissing mess of garbage can clattering. Imagine the rawest form of black metal born from a garage where corrugated walls are whacked with batons to the raucous unholy screams.

‘Drunk Shit’ could be considered melodious in comparison to the previous tracks, while ‘Destroy’ again promotes that lo-fi black metal-cum-punk crossover barbed mess. Finally, the rancid ‘Ass Licker’ rounds off this chaotic, frenzied EP which is a work of angst and anarchy.
