BÜDDAH
The Curse Of Ferrius EP

Self-released (2022)
Rating: 7/10

This is the debut release from this Polish outfit who dabble in black / thrash conjurations. There is something mysterious about this EP, and maybe that’s down to the stark production and lo-fi oddness as vocalist Jeleń (aka Julian Schutta) barks and rasps his way through the murkiness created by guitarist Night Spell (aka Kajetan Krzanowski), bassist Wolnir (aka Bartosz Pinkowski) and drummer Stefan (aka Michał Stefański).

You get five tracks here, all of which are catchy numbers – particularly the title track – and this EP has a rather suffocating tone whereby the primitive riffs amble nicely to the steady kick of the drum. ‘Endless Dungeon’ is another gem of a tune which lumbers in doomy fashion before the brisk cold snap sets in. It’s all rather accessible fun as steady opener ‘Selbstmord’ grooves nicely and closer ‘Bloodstone Lands’ follows a similar path.

There is always that black metal element to the process, more so in the scratchy vocal snaps and general stuffiness, but the organic feel and the fact that Büddah has an eye for a melody results in an infectious and primitive design that should appeal to anyone with a fondness for grim yet foot-tapping extreme metal.
