ZOMBIE RIOT
World Epitaph

Kernkraftritter (2023)
Rating: 6/10

German death metal band Zombie Riot return with their second full-length and serve up a platter of chunky riffs and barking vocals which at times hints at the likes of Deicide and a mid-to-late 90s sort of aggression. The vocals of Matze do have a Glen Benton vibe to them, but what I do like about the album are the thrashier segments as evidenced on ‘Spreading The Fear’, and I’d liked to have heard more of that sort of fast-paced vim.

Guitarist Tobias also provides vocal screams, but again it’s the melodious strains the band offers that keeps me interested throughout as they scamper through ten solid tunes, culminating in the closing instrumental ‘World Epitaph’ which is probably the heaviest and slowest cut on the record and the lack of a vocal attack makes for a rewarding respite. I’d like to see the band shift into this doomier trudging in future releases and it’ll be even more entertaining if fused with thrashier passages.

Elsewhere, there are the more formulaic blasts of brutality such as on ‘Eat.Prey.Gore’, ‘Feed The Beast’ and the speedy ‘Anthropophobic’. World Epitaph does contain moments of note, but not enough to hold my attention for more than a few spins.
