Undo The Chains

Redefining Darkness (2021)
Rating: 8/10

Undo The Chains is album number three from this prolific Indiana act that likes to unleash blackened thrash upon our bleeding ears. From the tasty cover art to the fiery axe work and those face-melting vocalisations, this is an intense, blazing ride from a band that demands you take note.

Straight off the bat this is a scorching listen; the quartet not messing around when it comes to assembling their bracing brand of lethal thrash. Matt Sokol’s pipes are raw, frenzied bursts of fire, wonderfully suited to the racket around him.

All tracks offered are short shocks to the system, rapid ambushes propelled by the twin axe attack of Sokol and Jason Schultz, the damaging bass of Chris Petkus, and the assaulting percussion of Mike Szymendera.

Numerous vile concoctions hit you hard, including the venomous strains of ‘Time Wins’ with its glinting chug, the blazing black thrash of ‘Mistress Of The Void’, the barbaric, clawing velocity of ‘Cloaked In Black’ and the toxic belligerence of ‘Disgusting’.

The punk attitude is evident throughout, giving this opus extra vim in every department. Wraith, as their moniker suggests, are not reinventing the steel, but more so whacking you over the head with a spiked, rusty mallet.

Undo The Chains can be a tad generic, but Wraith ply their trade well and leave long lasting wounds in their wake.
