VOMITORY
All Heads Are Gonna Roll

Metal Blade (2023)
Rating: 8/10

Having announced their reunion in 2018, Swedish death metal machine Vomitory finally hits home with a new full-length album, which comes 12 years after their last outing, Opus Mortis VIII.

This was always going to be a rampant return, and if Vomitory were a mixed martial arts individual they’d be the sort that takes its opponent down within seconds of the bell and ground and pound until forcing a bloody, mangled submission within a minute. All Heads Are Gonna Roll is a frantic and rabid return that is riddled with blastbeats, pummeling riffs and those guttural coughs from bassist Erik Rundqvist.

Through the damaging speed it’s still nice to hear some mid-tempo crushing, such as on ‘Ode To The Meat Saw’ where that classic, yet almost hardcore, Swedish grind occurs. I also admire the guys for the sprigs of melody too (‘The Deepest Tomb’), but weight is never once sacrificed on what is an ultra-heavy opus. The thrashing malice of the opening title track plus the equally ravaging ‘Piece By Stinking Piece’ show the threatening side of Vomitory at its deadly peak.

‘Raped, Strangled, Sodomized, Dead’ was never going to be subtle, but a vein of dissonant melody does run through it. In fact, the same could be said for any track you choose to focus on; ‘Dead Man Stalking’, ‘Decrowned’ and ‘Dead World’ mastering the art of savagery but holding a deep melody at their spine.

Vomitory is back with an apt album title and a freshness and vigour to get their fan base salivating once again.
