SOUL GRINDER
Anthems From The Abyss

MDD (2022)
Rating: 7/10

German death metallers Soul Grinder emerge from the darkness with their second full-length platter, Anthems From The Abyss. This is standard but catchy extremity riddled with hyper blast beats, an intriguing vocal slur and some solid chugging.

The opening title track is my favourite tune on the opus as it incorporates some nice effects alongside the torrent of tremolos. There’s nothing flashy or atmospheric about the album as it unravels but I do like to shifts of pace throughout, and again I refer to the title track which exhibits enough shifts to keep the listener engaged.

Another of my favourite tracks is ‘The Soul’s Mirror’ with its suspenseful build and drum rolls courtesy of Maté “Balrogh” Balogh, while the guitar work takes on an almost thrashy aggression. Meanwhile, ‘I Am The Silencer’ rushes like a blackened death track; again the vocals are of interest and are not your standard death metal growls even though they remain malevolent and guttural.

Elsewhere, ‘The Last Supper’ comes complete with a nice crisp metallic chug, ‘Supreme Enemy’ is equally catchy in its design and groove, while ‘Spirit’s Asylum’ showcases some militant percussion before engaging with its mid-tempo drudgery.

Anthems From The Abyss is an efficient offering from this consistent trio and I expected nothing less.
