MY FUNERAL
Funeral Manifesto

Inverse (2022)
Rating: 7/10

Certainly far from being the best Finnish band on the circuit, this four-piece has still become somewhat veterans and remain prolific since forming in 2005 with Funeral Manifesto being the fourth full-length release from these guys.

This is solid and aggressive thrash in the vein of classic Sepultura, more so via their 1993 Chaos A.D. opus. Vocalist Ilkka Sepponen has that Max Cavalera sort of rant about him and the music is somewhat raw but also melodic in equal measures. There are times when Slayer springs to mind (‘Suicidal Thrash’), but the quartet isn’t afraid to show its influences throughout this solid platter.

Of the ten numbers on offer I was initially drawn to the choking, smoking clank of ‘Nirvana Of Negative’ which has a hardcore menace about its rawness. I also enjoyed ‘The Night Will Come’ with its slow build and eventual steady grind where again there’s that Sepultura feel.

The clattering chug of ‘Twice Fallen Angel’ appeals to, sort of shifting the band towards an early 90s style, because although My Funeral is a thrash act there are a few swerves to that 90s almost industrial dynamic yet mixed with a masculine, but not quite grungy flavour.

Funeral Manifesto is tough, opinionated metal and probably the band’s best to date.
