MORTA SKULD
Creation Undone

Peaceville (2024)
Rating: 7.5/10

Since 1990 Wisconsin, Milwaukee-based death metallers Morta Skuld has entertained but never moved out of the genres second division. Even with those early demos and 1993’s debut album Dying Remains, the guys never quite hit my sweet spot. Even so, I’ve remained loyal to the band and believe that some of their more recent works such as Suffer For Nothing (2020), were really strong.

Creation Undone is Morta Skuld’s seventh full-length release and is another damaging assault where the riffs pummel, drums pulverise and the bass cracks bones. As expected, it’s a record that maintains a level headed old school approach. There’s no real diversity from the barrage, but then why would there be? Tracks such as ‘Soul Piercing Sorrow’, opener ‘We Rise We Fall’ and personal favourite ‘By Design’ all judder and quake, bolstered by drummer Eric House who tears through the stomping ‘Painful Conflict’ and the bruising ‘Perfect Prey’.

I still don’t see Morta Skuld climbing the death metal ladder and I don’t think they want to, as they are more than happy to sit comfortably in a realm not far removed from Vomitory and Malevolent Creation. Guitarist Dave Gregor’s roars remain potent as do his riffs alongside fellow axe man Scott Willecke, but it’s not death metal I’ll play regularly or with any sort of excitement, although my respect for the guys never wanes.
