IRON CURTAIN
Savage Dawn

Dying Victims Productions (2024)
Rating: 7.5/10

I really like the album cover for what is the fifth full-length opus from this Spanish bunch which formed in 2007. With Iron Curtain you know what you are getting; straight up speedy destruction equipped with a Mad Max sort of apocalyptic mayhem that clanks to the sound of rattling chains.

Iron Curtain take a dollop of traditional metal but bridge the gap with speed metal and coat it all in a scalding dust. There are no real surprises with Savage Dawn, and no one was expecting any, but what we do get is a volatile album that spits and sneers like old Slayer, early Metallica, Motörhead and Venom as exhibited on ‘Devil’s Eyes’ with its ferocious axe work and snapping vocals. ‘Gypsy Rocker’ boasts a New Wave Of British Heavy Metal rustiness coupled with Motörhead in that punky guitar tone.

The dynamics rarely change as the album unravels to reveal a plethora of similarly designed speed metal romps such as ‘Thy Wolf’ and ‘Tyger Speed’, but I enjoyed the punky intro to ‘Evil Is Everywhere’ and the strong Motörhead vibes on ‘Rattlesnake’.

There have never been any heirs and graces about Iron Curtain and their oxidized rambles, and with Savage Dawn I find a degree of comfort in such drunken brawls.
