HUMAN COMPOST
Descendants Of Evil

Cavernous (2022)
Rating: 7/10

Eight years after their debut full-length outing From The Grave They Crawl, Canadian combo Human Compost surges at us once again with their flatulent vocal gurgles and musical extremity.

Very much groove-based, this quintet has churned out some decent material since forming in 2008. Their trio of EPs released between 2013 and 2104, were solid deathgrind outings, and this new release rattles by in similar infected fashion.

Hyper blast beats are fused efficiently with slower, mid-tempo chunks of nastiness, solos whirl in devious fashion through the mesh of destructive hammering, and for the most part the vocals of Geoff Hodsman exist as chesty bellows that occasionally drift into rasps and at times the more annoying pig grunts.

While this is an extremely brutal opus there’s some fantastic riffs to get your claws and teeth into, particularly with the ominous dirges of ‘Night In The Crypt’ and ‘Visions Within The Grave’, but like most tracks these soon speed up and become standard yet battering death / grind offerings.

All the tracks are relatively short but that’s good for me because this sort of stuff doesn’t always engage me. Even so, ’Funerary Cannibalism’ again offers some excellent mid-tempo work, while ‘Corporealized’ rattles like a chainsaw just started up and ready to sever limbs. It’s good, extreme death-cum-grind all round which is summed up by the closing strains of the title track with its crushing dynamics.

I’m impressed how these guys manage to create so many catchy segments while remaining so potent, so if you like punishing brutality but want to nod along in-between bouts of auditory murder then grab yourself a copy.
