HELLRAISER
Dream Of Doom

Metalism (2022)
Rating: 6.5/10

Dream Of Doom is the sixth full-length opus from Russian thrashers Hellraiser. Formed back in 1990, the Moscow-based band are fronted by guitarist and founding member Alexander Lvov whose vocal tone is a rather an acquired taste; it’s a strangely war-torn grizzled grunt of sorts but it certainly adds an extra layer of steel to the attack.

Lvov is joined by bassist Dmitry Molotov and drummer Sergej Kutaev, and together they create a steady thrash juggernaut sound that drips with a Slayer-esque menace. This is particularly evident on the opening title track, but there’s plenty of steady melody too as with ‘Never’, although what you will find on this release is that a majority of the tracks are mid-paced thrash and rarely does the band shift into pacier climes.

The likes of ‘Till The End’ and ‘Fuckin’ Day’ are chunky affairs of a slightly generic nature, but there are still faster barrages to contend with such as on ‘Outrage Of Hate’ and ‘FB & SA’. However, throughout this record there is a generic tendency not helped by the rather limited vocal chops. But if you like simple, Slayer-type thrashing then there’s far worse albums you could opt for. It’s great that Hellraiser is still around, even if they don’t quite live up to their moniker.
