Hailing from Manchester in England, Ghost Keeper is a thrash act that may have slipped under your radar since forming. So far they have released a brace of EPs and albums, including this latest enjoyable feast. Upon first listen, especially on the title track, I heard a lot of groove, reminding me somewhat of Testament with the chugging riffs and deep vocal chops from David Ashley Dee.
This is solid stuff indeed as the combo opens with the snappy ‘Reject (Non-Essential Bullshit)’. It’s not overtly technical but the band showcases a lot of maturity and steel, particularly with the crunch of ‘The Screaming Brain’. From here on in there is a spine of San Francisco Bay Area density coupled with a more rugged UK thrash belligerence.
You get fed nine strong tracks including the hasty ‘Brain Rot’, the infectious chugger ‘Dissenter’ and the furious ‘Everything Sucks!’ To an extent the album cover art didn’t need to be so goofy, because when the band members put their heads together they are more than capable of creating very serious and melody-tinged thrash. I may be a bit late in hopping aboard the Ghost Keeper crazy train, but now I’ve got a ticket I’m really enjoying the ride.
