Long Island, New York is the setting for this short but effective death metal debut full-length from Doomcreeper. This album is a somewhat no frills affair that has a feel of, say, 1993 about it. Deep, guttural vocals and some deadly chugging keep this opus flowing like molten lava pits eating a village.
Melodious leads and fast paced passages; sure, it’s not exactly murky or unorthodox, but Doomcreeper stick to what they know best and churn out a batch of infectiously heavy songs starting with the bellowing ‘In Their Blood…’, with its tempo changes, right through to the trudging and ominous ‘Hidden Being’.
The instruments are clear, and yet there remains a truly guttural and ghoulish delight to this platter. Forget fancy aesthetics, Doomcreeper exists to drag then pummel, and yet within its folds you find a sprig of surprises, such as the driving technical awareness of ‘Algol’ to the melodious grind of ‘Onslaught’.
Consistency and focus is key here on this debut, and although at times a touch reserved Cryptic Death shows the potential and talent of the individuals concerned.
