DENIAL OF DEATH
A Failed Exorcism

Self-released (2022)
Rating: 8/10

Bavaria’s Denial Of Death is an interesting clan with vocals that lean towards a more industrialised sneer, but I guess, for the most part, this is a very atmospheric black / death opus. The vocals of this composition are handled by bassist Glauber Haereticus who is joined by guitarists Susie Merz and Júlio Cézar and drummer Olethros, and together they create a ghoulish and at times a rather original batch of songs.

When you hear the trudging menace of ‘Among The Dead’ you get a traditional metal feel only with snarling vocals, and yet the title track is daubed in a Gothic grandiosity that mixes thrash / Goth and black metal aesthetics – and that’s what makes this record so rewarding.

From the off with ‘Evil By Nature’ right to the close of ‘Black Mass’ there’s a driving sense of darkness and foreboding channelled through an unorthodox industrial-tinged tone which at times reminds me of Malhavoc.

I just can’t pin this platter down. Okay, so ‘God Is Dead’ has that raw, primitive black metal feel alongside a raging punkniness, but ‘Pleasure In Pain’ has far more going on within its theatrical layers as does the chugging ‘Kill The Clown’ with its eventual hasty retreats. If any album was suited to an All Hallows’ Eve release it was this!
