CAVERNOUS ASSASSIN
Ritual

Self-released (2022)
Rating: 7/10

It’s about time that 2022 gets hit by a Venezuelan earthquake! Cavernous Assassin is the latest orgasm to erupt from the orifice of gloom, and the result is Ritual, a raw, rank and rattling debut album boasting six tracks which sound as if they were recorded in Satan’s bathtub.

This record has a strange, ghastly air to it as the deep, gravelled vocals echo around the chamber walls like rusty chains being bashed on your skull. Musically there is – as the band name suggests – a cavernous feel as thick solos squirm through layers of furnace-fired riffs which gnash and slash like a second hand incinerator struggling to cope with the pile of bones it is smoking.

The sludgy atmosphere enables this record to exist within dense plumes of choking smoulder. You get hit by a thrashing rage that also nods towards an Autopsy or Repulsion putridity as ‘The Art Of Mutilation’ rambles along and ‘Haunt’ has an almost blackened speed aesthetic stirred with a deathly spoon. The percussion on this filthy opus just gallops in such hideous fashion, hissing with venom and rawness.

‘Saturn Devours His Son’ continues to exude filth where such blackness is discharged at an alarming and almost punky rate as if something has grabbed the first Bathory album and slowed it right down.

Thankfully this cess pit of audible horror is only 30 minutes in length, but no amount of holy water or Ibuprofen can save you from this cruel and punishing speedball of Satan.
