CATBREATH
Slice ’Em All

Iron Shield (2024)
Rating: 7/10

The weirdly named Catbreath are upon us, a German combo who dabble in crossover thrash and chunks of humour. The band originates from Kiel and while they have a knack for a handful of silly song titles (‘Blood Spill Claw Kill’, ‘The New Claw Order’ and ‘All Paws Are Equal’), Catbreath is also responsible for some very good thrash. I particularly like the gruff vocal style of Philipp and the way guitarist Kniffel delivers the catchy riffs, nowhere more apparent than on ‘All Paws Are Equal’.

Although this debut full-length album has a duration just shy of 30 minutes, it’s instantly accessible and could probably benefit if stripped of its humour. Even so, ‘The New Claw Order’ and ‘The Black Revenger’ boast some superb chugging, while ‘The Scum Will Rise Again’ is wonderfully crisp and aggressive as is my favourite song ‘Head Of The Snake’.

The vocals really do drive this album on, but it’s an all round solid thrash record full of crunch and vigour. Slice ’Em All is rounded off with ‘Blood Spill Claw Kill’ which bristles with speed and a rawness. I just hope the humour doesn’t cloud the ability of the band because Catbreath really is a thrashing tour de force.
