ABRADED
Unadulterated Perversity

Aggressively Uninterested (2023)
Rating: 8.5/10

Cleveland, Ohio-based death grind mob Abraded have only been out of the sewer since 2018 and already they have vomited forth a demo, a single, and in 2020 a riveting and repulsive self-titled debut album, and now we are decapitated by another full-form offering of foulness.

Members Patric Pariano, Mark Gallon and Evan Crouse are responsible once again for a batch of sickly chunks of perverse death metal that bring plenty of recognisable strains but which ultimately bore into your brain like parasites. From the twisted solo-ridden opening title track, right through to the meaty ‘They Die’ with its lumbering sludge, and on to the final track ‘Noxious Fumes’, Abraded soak the listener in at times peculiar squelching and dank death metal morbidity.

Unadulterated Perversity is the sort of album which keeps my faith firmly wedged up the crutch of modern day death metal, a genre which is quite literally feeding off its own bodily algae and weirdness to survive. Abraded, like a few other bands, have a certain thread of oddness that runs through their terrifying bouts of extremity. The aforementioned ‘Noxious Fumes’ is evidence of such stirring, atmospheric gloom, and then you hear the chugging groove of ‘The Hillsnatch’ or the galloping, Carcass-infected ‘Forced Inoculation’ and you appreciate the diversity of the band.

Of course, it’s the track titles which ram home the seedy absurdity of this bunch; ‘Putrefying Cunnilingus’ and ‘Ontologically Recapitulated Phylogenesis’ spring to mind. Meanwhile, the seemingly prosaic ‘Hide’ or ‘Nothing Left To Lose’ offer up as equally macabre clanking, particularly the percussive banging of the latter.

I’m sure all Ohio residents and fans the world over will be proud of this trash can full of toxic flesh and slurping slugs… I know I am.
