Although a short affair at 26 minutes, this snappy affair does enough to pull you in to its thorny lair and shred your flesh.

This Moscow-based four-piece is rather prolific. In 2021 they released two albums – Unspoken and Hatred Ahead – and there has also been a handful of singles and an EP, and now this new full-length which again features the raw, scratchy vocal techniques of Anna Nikulnikova who is quite the scathing force.

Opener ‘Disease’ is pretty much a mid-tempo groove before its finale of wild axe work, but it sets the tone perfectly for what is a serious and raw thrash metal workout whereby even the shorter songs (‘Until Death’) boast an ominous tone. Elsewhere, there is the Slayer-esque fizz of ‘Bloodshed’, the rasping fury of ‘Traffic Fumes’ and the equally destructive slices of ‘Hunting Down’ and ‘Buried’. It is hostile material indeed; a sort of razor sharp and I guess contemporary design with nods to the likes of Vektor due to its sniping attitude.

Clearly passionate about the sound they create, Mortal Dismay deserves to make an impact within the thrash field, especially as there are so many sound-alikes all too eager to channel the goofy, carton drunkenness of the 80s. Instead, give Until Death a visit and prepare yourself for a whipping.

Neil Arnold

MORTAL DISMAYUntil Death More Hate Productions (2023)Rating: 7/10 For a lethal dose of thrash metal why not hitch a ride on the third album from Russian band Mortal Dismay.
