Vocally, Flemming Wehren, formerly of Methhead, has an almost black / death rasp to his malicious scowls and his axe work, alongside Mathias Michalczak, is as equally vicious.

This is snappy death / thrash metal steeped in melody while always remaining aggressive and humourless, meaning tracks such as ‘The Serpent Inside’ and ‘A Weapon Called Time’ do tend to melt into one another and at times become generic but always hostile.

It’s not that Frostshock is a limited beast, but the structure with which they work with is tight and colourless in its vigour. A majority of the tracks run in similar fashion and the likes of ‘Worn Out’, ‘Frostshock’ and ‘Bludgeoned’ offer little variety. However, there’s still enough on offer here to suggest a band that although one-dimensional is eager to pummel its listener and reduce them to a frost-bitten state.

This is a hostile record that pulls no punches and comes at you like a nasty blizzard of seething intensity that’ll have you reaching for the central heating button straight after exposure.

Neil Arnold

FROSTSHOCKFrostshock Self-released (2023)Rating: 7/10 Bridging the gap between thrash and death metal, German upstarts Frostshock embark on their career with this 11-track debut full-length offering.
