Vocally, there’s a hint of Metallica’s James Hetfield but with extra savagery, but from start to finish this is an accomplished platter you’d be pleased to have purchased in 1988.

The title track is a perfect way to kick this album off and some of the guitar work is to be admired as the combo shifts between polished speed and more unorthodox melodies. Thankfully, the theme continues and there is no waning of interest; ‘Legacy Of Greed’ has a choppy vocal attack, ‘Lost Generation’ allows for a superb bass and percussive performance and builds nicely from both, while ‘Mr. Death’ explores interesting angles in its hammering.

It seems natural that flecks of Slayer creep in, but Illusion has very much combed the bulging web for thrash metal influences and delivers it with a staggering maturity and aggression while maintaining accessibility. The slower premise of ‘Master Of Disaster’ has you tapping along to its varying shifts and ‘Titans Of The New World’, complete with militant introduction and bass buzz, unravels as an aggressive beast brimming with hostile torrents.

Born In Technology is thrash metal how it used to be.

Neil Arnold

ILLUSIONBorn In Technology Self-released (2022)Rating: 7/10 From Norway to Japan there have been plenty of bands named Illusion, and you can now add this Catalonia act to the list.
