Embodiment Of Evil<\/em> is the debut offering from Los Angeles, California-based deathsters Sermon Of Rot who feature members of Occulsed, Obsidian Hooves and Moldering Vibration among others. And what you get here are six tracks and 27 minutes of nasty death metal drenched in a grim atmosphere.<\/p>\n

Like a lot of current death metal acts, Sermon Of Rot bring plenty of cavernous aesthetics to their bludgeoning sound as evidenced on \u2018Diminished Reality\u2019 which initially starts as a damp slog before becoming a violent hail of gushing evil and then shifting back to that eerie slog. The vocals are the usual remote belches of black fire and the music presents itself as a blubbery wall of squalid fat and humid repugnance.<\/p>\n

The variety of shifting melodies always intrigue with this sort of stuff, and it means that there\u2019s always an air of the unorthodox about the sound as the likes of \u2018Cursed Existence\u2019 act as billowing wind tunnels of utmost darkness and clambering cold.<\/p>\n

The only break from such diseased churning comes via some excellent solo work, the leads acting as peculiar deranged wisps snaking through the murkiness. But for the most part it\u2019s about the listener surrendering to the sordid mashing as showcased on closer \u2018Unraveling\u2019 where those sloppy, dredging chops interact with sudden flurries of grinding mulch.<\/p>\n

This is all very fetid, and all served up with plenty of mashed entrails and brain pulp as Sermon Of Rot become the latest frightfest to liquefy your intestines by way of cavernous cacophonies.<\/p>\n
