Somewhat left behind and splitting up in 1994 and then returning four years later, In Pain has nonetheless rattled on through the years, but <em>The Thing From The Grave<\/em> is only the band\u2019s second full-length offering.<\/p>\n<p>What you get here is melodiously aggressive if somewhat formulaic design built upon the ever-recognisable yet constantly recycled Swedish buzzsaw riffs. The guitar tone we\u2019ve all become accustomed to grinds along rather nicely and tracks such as \u2018Mistress Of The Dark\u2019 has a doomier element, whilst \u2018Witchcraft\u2019 gallops with a vim and exuberance. It\u2019s all there, archetypal Swedish brutality but mid-paced and speedy and rounded off by the fullness of Michael \u201cMicke\u201d Andersson\u2019s gruff vocals.<\/p>\n<p>Catchiness is key here, which is exhibited on tracks such as the gloomy trudge of the hilariously titled \u2018Decapitated By Lightning\u2019, the violent blasts of \u2018Cannibal Feast\u2019 and the varying tempos of \u2018The Beast Within\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Thankfully, at just under 40 minutes, <em>The Thing From The Grave<\/em> doesn\u2019t overstay its welcome and so if you\u2019re a sucker for that typical, unwavering Swedish pulverisation then get on down.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Neil Arnold<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>IN PAINThe Thing From The Grave SouthCoast Productions \/ Helter Skelter Productions (2022)Rating: 7\/10 This Swedish bunch has been in existence since 1992 and that\u2019s why I can forgive them for churning out fairly standard death metal.
