The guitar tone feels fresh, the bass of Alexander Farrington is there to be heard, and the drums of Dre Duarte are fearsome and ferocious. I guess it’s the sort of death metal that would have been popular in the 90s; crisp, clear yet with enough rotting tones and guttural growls to warrant your attention.

Throughout this opus there’s an abundance of melody, and some excellent moments when the track breaks down into fine, chugging melody (‘Unfathomable Depths’), or builds from mid-tempo butchery into ominous gruesomeness (‘Bludgeoned’), but it is that gnarly bass tone which holds things together, packing out the sound like extra meat in a sandwich.

The fluttery, almost black / death guitar scurry on ‘Sensory Deprivation’ is also of interest, as is the morbid haste of a track such as ‘Slam The Coffin Shut’. It’s good, consistent death metal that I tend to slap on after a good, albeit simplistic splatter movie and that’s a compliment to what is essentially a standard but effective death metal outing that is brim full of beefy riffs and chesty coughs which demand hefty chewing action.

Neil Arnold

CADAVEROUSRemnants Of Violence Self-released (2022)Rating: 7/10 Here’s 11 belligerent tracks of Indianapolis death metal, this being the debut full-length slab from this trio which is fronted by the barking tones of guitarist Jesse Curtis.
