However, this is still an engaging and relentless downpour of savagery.

RotBorn seem to be influenced by a myriad of bands, mostly skimming the top off the mid-90s death metal arena whereby the riffs drive exceptionally hard, as do the drums although at times they can appear a bit too “clicky”.

This is not actually an overly heavy album in spite of its barrages of brutality where hints of Deicide, Nile, Cannibal Corpse, Morbid Angel et al leak through. There’s also a blitzkrieg of blast beats throughout, so hats off to percussive beast Nestor Carrera and the hammering bass of Jeferson Tarzia.

The slower passages (riddled all too much by that clicky drum) are catchy enough (‘Moral Grudge’) and there’s a lot of death / thrash structures going on too (‘The Stench Of A New Era To Come’), but the band’s main focus on this album are those speedy assaults and that’s probably where I tend to drift. However, ‘Praise The Downfall’ has a very sinister tone with its mid-tempo chugs and it remains my favourite track on what is a savage expression of Brazilian brutality.

Neil Arnold

ROTBORNOn The Perspective Of An Imminent Downfall Redefining Darkness (2022)Rating: 7/10 Prepare yourself for 27 minutes of brutal Brazilian death metal that’s somewhat of an acquired taste for myself, mostly due to the vocals which at times flirt with that grindcore style of squealing mashed with a Glen Benton (Deicide) attack.
