Sadly, a lot of this sort of stuff is being puked out nowadays, but I recommend you give this one a go if you like hearing a hyper version of, say, classic Exodus or Overkill, but fused with that crossover flavour.

An Evil Born From This Void offers four rip-roaring tracks – ‘Servants Of The Abyss’, ‘Living Obituary’, ‘Waiting To Die’ and ‘Poisoned Womb’ – which are all probably more serious than I’ll give them credit for simply because it has that jokey thrash feel that’s been doing the rounds for 20 years.

One cannot argue however with the scathing axe work on ‘Living Obituary’ or the snappy vocal retorts on the excellent ‘Servants Of The Abyss’. It’s all very fast, sporadically littered with gang chants and laced with a bass that just rattles like marbles in the skull.

The slower chugs – although scarce – make for a nice respite, particularly on ‘Living Obituary’, but as I’ve stated, this is very much a record that moshes hard and remains fierce even with the punkier blends of ‘Poisoned Womb’. So yeah, you know what’s coming once the first track is over and the second begins.

Convulsis have no passion for diversity within their sound and prefer to chug n’ rant until their hearts are content. How this sort of rather one dimensional thrash transfers to a full-length we’ll have to wait and see, but for now enjoy the pool party while it lasts.

Neil Arnold

CONVULSISAn Evil Born From This Void EP Self-released (2022)Rating: 6.5/10 As generic it may be the debut EP from Michigan moshers Convulsis still makes for an ideal party soundtrack whereby skateboarding headbangers can unite.
